On my way up north to paddle the Yukon River I had a beautiful close encounter with Wood Bison that captivated my soul. The dancing northern lights created by the fire and ink help capture the spirit and essence of these beautiful animals who have returned to their rightful place in the wilds of North America. They were meant to roam and be free. And so are we.

Even though bison and buffalo are often used interchangeably, they are distinct animals and you will only find bison in North America or Europe.

There was a time when bison stood thick, with 30-60 million spread out over North America. By 1888 no bison were left in Canada by overhunting.

Thanks to bison reintroductions, there are now around 2,000 plains bison and 11,000 wood bison roaming wild in Canada including Banff National Park after an absence of over a century. Even though bison and buffalo are often used interchangeably, they are distinct animals and you will only find bison in North America or Europe.

As a "keystone species," they benefit everything from bugs to birds to bears in the unique habitat they create.
